Literacy Clubs

did you hear
The Meadows Elementary Literacy Clubs?

The Meadows Elementary currently has three literacy clubs that focus on finding ways to support independent reading with accountability.  We believe by creating opportunities for students to interact with their favorite books, children can increase their comprehension and ability to discuss what they know. When children meet with their friends to share reading highlights, complete art projects and Web-based activities, they turn reading into a social activity, and that encourages them to keep reading.

Why Promote Independent Reading?

Research reveals that motivation and choice play key roles in reading.
And, strong and capable readers are those who read widely and diversely in a wide variety of genres and text types. In the quest to build capable readers, promoting independent, self-selected reading remains key. Creating ravenous, lifelong readers doesn’t just happen, it takes a school-wide culture to help reach that goal.

We ALL want kids to read more! We want them to enjoy reading. We know that reading builds vocabulary, fluency, and background knowledge. The Meadows Elementary Library is doing its part to promote and encourage independent reading across our schools.

What are literacy clubs?

Literacy learning clubs are highly motivating small-group collaborations that can improve student's academic achievement, support their social-emotional development, and increase their enjoyment of reading and writing.

Here is a list of literature based clubs that are offered at the Meadows Elementary:

  • Brown Bag Book Club
  • Million Word Club
  • Texas Bluebonnet Award Club ( 3 - 5th Grade)
  • Library Assistants (4th and 5th Grade)

Why literature based clubs?
Research reveals that book clubs help children develop important language skills. Book discussions help children practice turn-taking, encourage them to use language to analyze, make predictions and solve problems, and provide them with opportunities to try out new vocabulary words. Simply by reading and participating in discussions themselves, parents can provide important language and literacy models for their children.
